Photographing newborns outside is some sort of magic. This outdoor newborn session in Utah was filled with tender moments and dreamy scenery: a calm lake, distant mountains, SO MUCH GREEN, and a sweet little girl.

As a Utah newborn photographer, I love offering in-home, studio, and outdoor sessions depending on the feel you’re going for. Outdoor newborn sessions are great for families who:
- Love soft, natural light and earthy tones
- Want a relaxed, minimal look with beautiful scenery
- Prefer not to shoot in-home but still want something intimate and simple
Because baby stays in your arms throughout most of the session, there’s no need for intricate posing or outfit changes. Instead, we can focus on your new little family and your sweet love for each other!
For this session, we kept things calm and baby-led. Most of the session was spent with mom or dad holding baby girl, but we also were able to get a few sweet shots of her by herself in my moses basket.
What to Expect During your Outdoor Newborn Pictures
I try to keep outdoor newborn sessions gentle and easygoing:
- I like to schedule sessions during golden hour for the best, softest light (this is usually 1-2 hours before sunset)
- I guide you through relaxed poses, always prioritizing baby’s comfort
- We capture a mix of family portraits, individual parent shots, and baby alone (if baby is content and settled!)
For outfit inspo, I like to recommend neutral, earth-toned outfits like the ones this sweet couple wore—colors that complement nature and let baby be the star of the show.
When it comes to newborn photography, we’re all there for the baby. They might wiggle, cry, need to eat, or fall asleep. That’s wonderful! That’s why we’re here!
